ABOUT CITY MARKET
Celebrating the anti-ordinary, envisioning the long-term effects on the social community and locational identity, the Community Plaza is the perfect environment to display all the talent of curators and artists throughout CNY.
By partnering with Bruce Block of the Antique Underground and Michael John Heagerty of Wildflowers Armory to recruit and curate Antique and Handmade Artisans, we are sure to provide an eclectic mix of vendors. With vast experience in civic engagement and placemaking, Bruce, whose 30+ year career as an Antiquer & Appraiser, with Michael John, whose history of activations and community building events to provide alternative uses for urban spaces, will bring life back to City Market at the Community Plaza.
The Everson Museum of Art will continue to provide pay-what-you-wish admission on event days and, new this year, will align its activities to offer art-making studios and docent tours within the museum, ultimately providing additional access to creative engagement opportunities and an air-conditioned place of rest for event-goers.
A community driven event - City Market allows for a Sunday stroll to include art, music and a bazaar-like atmosphere where visitors can enjoy the plaza at the Everson as it’s transformed into a vibrant opportunity to have direct interactions with interesting sellers of wares. Attendees can find something truly one-of-a-kind and enjoy the experience of browsing this family-friendly festival full of regional Art and Artifacts.
CITY MARKET COORDINATORS:
Bruce studied at The City College of New York and Went to Bronx High School of Science. Block’s career began as a modern dancer in New York City. During the summer months when his dance schedule was less demanding, Block would travel to a friend’s house in Skaneateles, about 40 minutes north of Syracuse. His friend’s wife had a small antique business in Rose Hill where Block used to help out.
In the late 1970's Bruce Opened The Antique Underground in Armory Square and helped fashion the unique neighborhood. He has traveled the world as a tour guide for adventure seekers and has an extensive collection of ceramics in his personal collection.
Block has brought Antiques from around the world to Syracuse for decades. Antique Underground is one of the only places you’ll find vintage Syracuse memorabilia sharing a counter with antiques from dozens of countries, thousands of miles away, most of which he's visited and explored in person.
He's got lots of stories to tell and memories to share and if you have any questions about any of his Antiques, He'll have answers!
Bruce Founded the City Market after being inspired by Flea Markets in New York City and decided to bring a similar market to Syracuse. The Antique Underground is open on Jefferson St. in Downtown Thursday-Sunday.
